Webinar on Geographic Information System(GIS)
A very informative and insightful webinar was organized by Computer Science and Engineering on Geographic Information Systems on 24th Oct, 20. It was with a collaboration with Orena Solutions. Speakers of the webinar were Mr. Saurin Mehta ( Results -driven operations Head & have 30+ years of experience in the filed of CAD/GIS/IT) and Ms. Sohini Munshi ( GIS Assistant Manager, S&P Global and have 9+ years of experience in Geo-informatics).
Orena Solutions is a visionary ICT company, headquartered in Vadodara, Gujarat, looking to rejuvenate the employability levels of the Indian workforce. With a collaboration with Orena Solutions we invited speakers for this webinar.
Webinar was started with a warm welcome. Mr. Saurin Mehta had given very briefed idea about the GIS. He discussed in very simple way that GIS allows us to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualize data in many ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts. He also introduced that A GIS helps you answer questions and solve problems by looking at your data in a way that is quickly understood and easily shared. GIS technology can be integrated into any enterprise information system framework.
Mr. Saurin Mehta gave brief ideas to the students regarding technical skills required for GIS like Mapping and Cartography, Geographical model of Earth, Deep understanding of drawing scales and Remote Sensing Software and Techniques. He also guided students regarding various tools and technologies required to be in the filed of GIS and Geo Informatics. Mr. Saurin Mehta had discussed various applications and usages of GIS in different areas.
After giving overview in various areas, Mr. Saurin Mehta had given detailed idea about How GIS can be applied to Water Network Management and its various layers. Mr. Mehta had also discussed about the modules of GIS in water management like water supply maintenance, Asset management, Consumer Management, Billing system, Employee management, Water quality management and Sewage management.
Mr. Mehta gave an overview of working of map location in GIS. He discussed that Map locations are used to find a feature and a finding patterns , Map Assets for distribution line information and Sewer Pipe Information. Mr. Mehta also gave a brief idea about map technical information and map densities. At the end sir had discussed a case study of Gas Distribution with project title of Re-Validation survey of Jagdishpur Haldia Pipeline. Sir had also discussed about career opportunities with multiple skill set and different profession were students can work.
After Mr. Mehta, Ms. Sohini Munshi had continued the session. She told that Python programming is a best programming language to build GIS based application. tableau software is also useful for GIS based applications. She has also gave overview of various professions were GIS can be used. For example in forest if we want to count total number of trees then through GIS we can do that.using various GIS techniques. Another example that she had discussed that through satellite images remotely we can plan where we can do the pipe lining. No need to reach at that place physically. GIS is also used in transportation and can be used in auto mated care driving system which map all the roads and hurdles with live data. Even virtual tour is also possible through GIS which is also initiated by national geographic. She also guided students regarding various tools and technologies used for develop GIS based application. She had introduced tableau , python , SQL, NoSQL, PostgreSQL as a basic building block to explore more about GIS.
In the last phase of the webinar, plenty queries were there in the student’s mind. Both speaker had solved their queries and gave proper guidance. Lastly, they threw some lights on ArcGIS , QGIS, Saga GIS tools to read and manipulate shape files. Ms. Abhilasha Vyas had asked few queries to read shape files in Saga GIS & Nature Earth data set. They suggested that the students who have good knowledge in python can develop their carrier in the field of GIS. At the end of this webinar, speakers gave brief overview of QGIS tool and how to view shape files and how to import shape files. Based on the shape file how we can see all the details about each dots in a shape file. The data which is incorporated with shape file could be manipulated and retrieved with the help of SQL queries.
This informative webinar was concluded with the hope to have such more collaborations and a training workshop to have a hand-son experience in the field of GIS.
Feedback of students: Feedback of students were very satisfactory and also asked GSFCU management to arrange this kind of informative sessions with hands-on training's.
